Misted from inside

A street junction in full sun, seen from a high balcony. Below, a zebra crossing with people on it; on the corner, a shop with plants and an awning; on the left, cars parked in a row. The shadows on the ground are short and hard: it is a clear day. And even so, half the frame is veiled in white. The veil is not even: thick in the top left corner and all along the edge, cleaner in the centre and to the right, where you can still make out the people and the stripes of the crossing. Trickles of droplets have run downwards. IRIS sees that the veil does not move with the scene: people walk underneath it and it stays where it is. What IRIS cannot do is touch the glass to find out where the water got in.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • misted from inside

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

part of the frame stays veiled, does not move with what is happening in front of it, and is still there after hours of sun

Then

  1. alert maintenance with the camera, the time and the video of the morning in which the veil grew
  2. say in the alert itself that this veil does not come off by cleaning from outside
  3. log how many days it has been like this and group the visit with the other cameras in the same area
The instruction that set it up«Tell me which cameras have a veiled lens and which of them are still the same with the sun full on them, so nobody climbs up to clean from outside what is on the inside.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the cameras working

The expensive part here is not the fault: it is the trip. Somebody sees a hazy picture, picks up a cloth, goes up the ladder and rubs the glass from outside. They come down, look at the monitor and it is the same, because the water is on the inside. That can be repeated every few weeks for months, and between trips the camera is only covering half its frame with no record of it anywhere. With IRIS the alert arrives on day one and says something different: the veil is still there with the sun beating down, it grows through the morning and drops in the afternoon, and rain does not take it away. With that, whoever goes up goes up once, with the seal and the desiccant in hand, and not with a cloth.

What people usually ask

Does condensation clear on its own once the sun comes out?

No. Mist inside a housing does not evaporate outwards, because the housing is closed. What the sun does is move it around: in the morning the water condenses at the top, with the midday heat it drops, and at night it comes back. It looks as though it improves for a few hours and the next day it is the same. While the moisture stays inside it does not go: the housing has to be opened, dried, the desiccant replaced and the way the water gets in found.

How do I know whether it is misted inside or outside before climbing up?

You look at the video, not at a single still. What is on the outside changes: rain leaves drops that run and vanish, and outside mist goes as soon as the temperature rises. What is on the inside behaves the other way round: it is still there in sunshine, it has the same shape day after day, and it grows through the morning. IRIS puts today’s picture next to yesterday’s at the same hour. It is not certainty, but it saves the trip with the cloth.

Can that camera still be used in the meantime?

Partly, and it is worth knowing which part. When the veil covers only a section of the frame, the rest still works: people and vehicles are still made out there and the rules still run. What cannot be done is treating the whole frame as covered. IRIS states which part it has stopped seeing, so whoever relies on that camera knows today what it covers and what it does not, instead of finding out on the day the video is needed.

See it for yourself

This isn’t a video. It’s a slice of the real screen.

A summary of the real interface, played hands-free. You see one case from start to finish; what you do not see are the other screens, and there are many.

  1. The hour, as a grid
  2. You look where it's dark
  3. You jump to that minute

And the best part

At four in the morning, the camera is still watching just as it does at noon.

No heavy eyelids, no distractions, no shift change. What happens at night is understood at night, not the next morning.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
