A child leaves school on their own
A small child with a backpack has just come through the school gate and is walking along the sidewalk toward the street. There’s no adult beside him. Behind him, the open gate and the schoolyard with the rest of the group; ahead, the curb and the crossing. IRIS sees that someone of a child’s height has come through the gate outward with nobody alongside. It doesn’t know who he is, who is meant to collect him, or who he is supposed to leave with.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a child comes through the gate onto the sidewalk with no adult beside them, within the accompanied-exit slot the school has set
Then
- alert the front desk and the teacher on duty with the camera and the time
- show the video of the seconds before, so they can see the way out he took
- log the time and the gate, so the school learns whether it is always the same spot
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a small child comes through the gate toward the street with no adult beside them, during the slot when leaving has to be accompanied.»
What changes
What changes for the school team
At pick-up there are two hundred children, a handful of adults and five minutes. A small child slipping out of the gate before whoever collects him arrives isn’t unusual: it happens, and almost always nothing comes of it. The bad part is finding out late, when nobody knows any more whether he left or is still inside and you have to ask class by class. IRIS raises it while the child is still on the sidewalk, with the camera and the time, and someone goes out to fetch him. It replaces nobody: the teacher on duty stays at the gate, where they should be. It takes away the one impossible part, which is watching all of them at once.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who each child is supposed to leave with?
No, and it never will. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on any student or any family. What it sees is that someone of a child’s height has come through the gate toward the street and that there’s no adult beside them. Who the child is and who they should leave with is known by the school, and decided by a person at the school.
What about the older ones, who leave on their own every day?
The rule is written by the school. In many schools the older years leave on their own with permission from home and the younger ones don’t, and the camera can watch only the slot and the gate that belong to the younger ones. IRIS doesn’t decide who may leave alone and holds no list of who may: it applies the slot and the gate it’s been given. If the rule changes in March, you change the rule.
Isn’t this keeping watch over the children?
The camera watches the gate and the sidewalk, which is the way out to the street. There are no cameras in classrooms, restrooms or locker rooms, and there won’t be. It does not count how many times each child leaves, it keeps no history on anyone, and it could not do so even if it wanted to, because it does not know who anyone is. The detection lasts as long as the situation lasts: a child on the sidewalk with no adult beside them. Once someone is beside them, it’s over.
See it for yourself
A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.
An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.
- You draw the line
- It counts by itself
- A number comes out
Next step
Public safety
What can a camera see without pointing at anyone?
13 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 4 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Data centers
What if the outage doesn’t start with an attack?
13 cases, and in every one of them IRIS raises an alert when something happens. You see each image as it is, and then with what it understands on top.
And the best part
Behind one camera you can put a person.Behind four thousand you can’t put anyone.
Adding a camera costs little; adding another pair of eyes doesn’t. So the cameras keep growing and the attention doesn’t. IRIS watches all four thousand at once and flags what matters today.
Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
