There’s smoke, and the exit people would have to use is blocked

Smoke is coming out of a service corridor, next to the café. Ten feet away is the emergency door, and in front of it stand a cage of boxes and a cleaning shopping cart: they have been there for eighteen minutes. Facing it, some sixty people have stopped and are looking toward the smoke, while on the other side people are already walking out. Two things at once, and both equally serious.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • smoke coming out of the service corridor
  • cage of boxes in front of the door
  • cleaning shopping cart right beside it
  • the emergency exit
  • crowd stopped, looking at the smoke
  • people leaving on the other side
  • the café along the corridor

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 35 sSmoke for
  • 18 minExit blocked for
  • 2Objects in front of the door
  • 60People stopped
  • 19:04:51Video from

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

When smoke appears or an emergency exit gets blocked

Then

  1. alert security with the floor, the door and what is blocking it
  2. open the video from the minute the first shopping cart was left there
  3. leave the alert in that exit’s log, with the time it opened and closed
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if there is smoke in a public area, or if an emergency exit has had something in front of it for more than five minutes.»

What changes

What changes for operations, for asset management and for security

Smoke is seen at once and put out. A blocked exit isn’t seen, and it turns a ten-second evacuation into a ten-minute one. IRIS reports both at the same time, with the video from the moment the smoke appeared and from the moment the first shopping cart was left there. And it reports the second one even when there’s no smoke: the door had been blocked for eighteen minutes, and that alert could have gone out eighteen minutes earlier. On the day it matters, that door has to be clear.

What people usually ask

Which is more serious, the smoke or the blocked door?

Both, and that’s why they come in the same alert. There’s somebody to put the smoke out within a minute. The blocked door is seen by nobody until it is needed, and by then it’s too late: that’s the difference between evacuating in ten seconds and evacuating in ten minutes. A mall has its exits sized by regulation, and a shopping cart in front cancels them out without anybody noticing.

Does there have to be smoke for it to flag the door?

No, and that’s where the real value is. The door had been blocked for eighteen minutes before the smoke appeared. That alert could have gone out eighteen minutes earlier, on any ordinary Tuesday, with nothing burning. Decide once — this door stays clear — and IRIS applies it every time, at three in the afternoon and at eleven at night.

Does IRIS detect fire or does it detect smoke?

It detects what’s visible in the image: a column of smoke where a moment earlier there was nothing. It doesn’t replace the building’s fire detection, which has its own sensors and its own rules, and it doesn’t say what’s burning. What it adds is the picture and the place right away, plus the video of the minute it started, so whoever decides can see with their own eyes what’s happening.

Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it’s a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool doesn’t fit in a box.

And the best part

Whoever is on duty already has a job.Watching forty screens doesn’t fit into the shift.

No shift has time to spare. IRIS watches all forty at once and brings only what needs to be seen, with its camera and its time. What happens next is that person’s call.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
