What changes for the manager and the front desk
Eleven in the morning: someone with no uniform crosses the service door carrying a box and the housekeeper follows him with her eyes, not knowing whether he is from the caterer. Everything the hotel runs on comes through that door — food, linen, maintenance, packages — and it goes out the same way. What changes is that every crossing is kept with its time and its video, and that at month end there’s a count of deliveries. The limit is clear: IRIS sees the door being crossed. It doesn’t see what’s inside the box and it doesn’t know whether the delivery was expected; the packing slip says that. There are cameras in the pantry, the kitchen, the store and the laundry, which are work areas. Not in the staff locker rooms: those are out, like the guest rooms and the bathrooms.
What people usually ask
Is IRIS saying that person is doing something wrong?
No, and it can’t. The only thing it states is that somebody has crossed a door that isn’t a public thoroughfare. It may be a courier with an expected delivery, an engineer who was called in, or somebody who took the wrong door. IRIS doesn’t judge and doesn’t guess at intentions: it puts the fact and the video in front of the person who can decide, and it does so while it’s happening, which is while you can still just ask.
Does it recognize staff by their faces?
No. IRIS does not recognize faces or compare them with anything. What it tells apart is clothing: the house uniform looks different from street clothes, in the same way that a safety vest looks different from a t-shirt on a building site. It sees garments, not people. If the hotel would rather not even have that, the rule can be left at the crossing of the door alone.
Where does a camera like this go, and where does it not?
It goes where people work and where goods move: the service door, the pantry, the store, the kitchen and the laundry. It doesn’t go where somebody has a right to be left alone: guest rooms, bathrooms and staff locker rooms are out, and that isn’t a setting anybody can flip on the fly. And where there’s a camera, it is signposted: the signage is part of the installation, not an extra.
