A car parked at an angle right across the substation gate and the technical door beside it. This is an ordinary street, with traffic, sidewalks and a crossing. The car has done nothing but park there. The problem is that this is where a truck has to get in on the day a machine has to be replaced.

What changes for whoever answers for the site
The day you need to get in is always the worst day. A blocked access isn’t noticed until the truck arrives with the replacement machine and can’t get in, and then hours go by looking for someone to move the car. With a camera watching that strip, the maintenance lead finds out the same day and at the hour, not on the day of the fault. And because it is logged, a month later you can see whether it was one careless driver or whether that strip is occupied every morning. That’s no longer an alert: it’s an argument for asking for proper signage.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS read the car’s license plate?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone and does not read license plates: it does not read them, store them or compare them against any database. It sees that there’s a vehicle on the access strip and how long it’s been there. Who owns it isn’t needed to know the gate is blocked, and it isn’t our business.
What if it’s the maintenance team’s own van?
It fires anyway, and the site decides what to do about it: it can switch the rule off during scheduled work windows, or raise the number of minutes before an alert. The rule is written by the operator, not by us. What we don’t do is recognize specific vehicles: that would mean identifying, and we don’t identify.
Why raise an alert over a badly parked car?
Because it isn’t a parking problem, it’s an access problem. In front of that gate a truck with a machine weighing tons has to fit, and somebody on foot with equipment has to reach the door beside it. When that’s needed, it is needed right now. That’s why it is watched every day, and not on the day it is needed.
