The cash room, almost ten in the morning. The vault door is open and a person is stepping through the doorway with a sealed package in their hands. At the back, an employee is working with her back turned by the shelves; on the counting table there are trays made up, and a shopping cart with more trays waits beside the doorway. IRIS marks three things and only three: that the door has been open for four minutes, that an object has crossed the doorway on its way out, and how many people are in the room while it happens. A movement like this may well be a scheduled shipment written down on a packing slip. IRIS doesn’t know that, and it doesn’t say it.

What changes for whoever answers for the branch network
What leaves a cash room gets written on a piece of paper. The paper says what was meant to leave; it doesn’t say what time it left or who was there. IRIS leaves the other half of the proof: the exact minute an object crossed the vault doorway and the video of that minute. Almost always it will match the packing slip, and when it matches nothing has happened: nobody hears about it, and that’s how it should be. The day it doesn’t match, the gap shows up in ten seconds instead of turning up in next month’s stocktake, when nobody remembers who was on shift.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know what’s inside the package?
No. It sees a box the size of a box and nothing else: it doesn’t look inside anything, it doesn’t read labels and it doesn’t know what’s in there. What it records is that an object that size crossed the vault doorway at that time, and it keeps the video so that somebody can compare it with the packing slip. Comparing is a person’s job, not IRIS’s.
Does this turn the staff into people under surveillance?
No, and it’s worth saying out loud. IRIS identifies nobody, follows no one around the building and doesn’t measure what anyone does during their shift. It watches a doorway, not the people who cross it: the rule talks about a door and an object. And the record protects the people who work there too. When a count doesn’t add up and there’s no data, the doubt gets shared out among everyone who had a key; when there’s a time and a video, the doubt lasts as long as it takes somebody to watch it.
Where is this camera’s limit?
It isn’t connected to the packing slip, it doesn’t check authorizations and it doesn’t know whether that movement was scheduled: all it can say is that it happened and when. It also can’t tell one package from a similar one. And the room has a difficulty of its own: the doorway is narrow and there are pillars, so if the object is held close to the body with the back turned to the opening, IRIS may record that a person went through and not that an object did. That’s why what it hands over is always the minute and the video, never a conclusion.
