What changes
What changes for whoever runs the parking lot
Three things that only matter on the day you have to run, and on that day they can no longer be fixed: a car on the evacuation lane, an area without light and somebody who hasn’t moved for a while. All three can be seen and timed, so they stop depending on somebody happening to walk past. The manager gets the alert while it’s happening and keeps the record of how long that exit was blocked — the first thing an inspection asks for.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know what’s wrong with the person on the ground?
No, and it doesn’t try to. IRIS does not diagnose and does not identify anyone: it sees that somebody is lying where nobody lies down and has not moved for a while. On that basis it raises the alert and saves the video. Who that person is and what is wrong is established by whoever gets there — and the point is that they get there sooner.
How does it tell a badly parked car from one that’s just passing through?
With the clock. The evacuation area is drawn on the image once and IRIS times how long a vehicle stays inside it. A car driving across never reaches the limit; one that stays does. And the limit is set by the parking lot, not by IRIS: what counts as an alert and what doesn’t is always decided by whoever runs the site.
Does it also warn if the lighting on a level fails?
Yes. An area that was lit and stops being lit is a visible change, and an evacuation route in the dark is a continuity and an inspection problem. IRIS reports the change with the level and the time, and keeps a record of how long it’s been that way. Changing the light fixture, obviously, is a job for a person.
