What changes for whoever answers for the plant
A crack that gets through is machined, assembled and found on the test bench or at the customer’s. By then there are machine hours and good parts built on top of it. With the portal, the quality manager has the picture of the casting, the time, and how many parts have been flagged during the shift. If it suddenly becomes five in one hour, the problem isn’t the part: it’s the mold, and the count is what shows it.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS also detect cracks inside the part?
No. A camera sees what’s on the surface: open cracks, burrs, deformation, a color that’s off, an uneven finish. An internal flaw doesn’t show in any image; that needs non-destructive testing, with ultrasound or X-rays. IRIS flags what can be seen from outside and leaves the picture with the time on it. What’s inside is what the test is for, and it’s worth saying so plainly.
Who decides what counts as a defect?
The plant does. IRIS doesn’t write the rules: the plant says which crack deserves an alert, on which area of the part and from what size, and that gets tuned by looking at images of real parts. What IRIS does is apply that rule to every part, the same way every time, and keep the image of each one it flags.
Does this replace dimensional inspection?
No. Measuring a dimension is the job of a gauge or a measuring machine, not a camera. IRIS looks at appearance: whether the part is broken, deformed, has a burr or an odd color. It’s a filter placed earlier, clearing the obvious out of the way so the fine inspection only sees parts worth measuring.
