What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
Half an hour of cell time gone and nobody has noticed: no alarm has gone off and no beacon has lit, because a cell stopped for want of material makes no noise. Nothing simply comes out, and the figure only turns up in the end-of-shift count. With the camera the alert comes while it’s happening, with the exact minute and the image of the empty bin. The operator standing there waiting stops waiting, and the refill is asked for sooner.

How does IRIS tell an empty bin from a full one?
By what can be seen inside it. You draw a zone over the bin and the camera looks at whether there are parts in there or not. It’s the same count it does with people at a doorway, applied to a crate. If the bin is covered, has a tarpaulin over it or falls outside the frame, the camera can’t say: then you need another viewpoint of the same spot.
Does IRIS know which component is missing?
It knows the bin is empty and the cell isn’t putting parts out. Which reference should have been in there’s on the works order, not in the camera. What IRIS adds is the exact minute the material ran out and the picture, so whoever refills knows which bin to go to instead of walking the whole plant.
Does IRIS stop the cell or order the material by itself?
It does neither. IRIS alerts; it doesn’t act. It doesn’t stop a machine, it doesn’t raise an order and it doesn’t send anybody anywhere: that’s decided by a person or by the system that already runs the plant. What changes is that the person finds out while it’s happening, not at the count at the end of the shift.
