Someone has climbed down into the chamber and nobody’s left up top

Mid-morning at the plant. The chamber cover is lying to one side, the ladder pokes out of the opening and an operator in hard hat and a safety vest is already climbing down: all you can see is his head, his shoulders and his gloves gripping the rung. Around the chamber the paving is empty. There’s nobody outside, no tripod, no lifeline in sight. IRIS sees two things and puts them together: someone has entered the chamber and there’s no person left in the attendant zone.

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

His shoulders are still above the rim: that’s the minute when he can still be told to come back up. The outside attendant isn’t paperwork, he is the one who raises the alarm and pulls on the line, and today there’s nobody. The maintenance supervisor gets the alert right then, not at Friday’s meeting. And the video of the entry stays, with the time on it, which is what any investigation asks for afterward and what nobody manages to reconstruct from memory and a signature on a permit.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS measure the gas inside the chamber?

No. A camera doesn’t measure atmospheres. Oxygen and gases are measured by the personal detector carried by whoever goes down, and no image replaces that. What IRIS sees is the part that can be seen: the cover moved aside, the person going in and whether anyone is keeping watch outside. Both things are needed and neither stands in for the other.

How does it know the person outside is the attendant?

It doesn’t know, and it doesn’t need to. IRIS identifies nobody and checks no names. It counts how many people are inside the marked zone around the access while someone is down there. If the number is zero, it raises an alert. Whether the person outside is the right one and properly trained is a matter for the work permit, not for the camera.

And if the attendant steps away for a moment?

That depends on what the plant decides. The rule carries a tolerance set by whoever runs the site: a few seconds to walk round a piece of equipment, or zero tolerance while anyone is down there. IRIS applies the number it is given and saves the video of the interval in which the zone was empty, so it can be looked at calmly afterward.
