The container plugged in isn’t the one that belongs there
Mid-morning in the dosing room. The row holds drums of sulphuric acid, one of sodium hypochlorite and three large totes. The middle one is plugged into the line and is pouring a green stream that has already spread across the floor. Above it hangs the red mark saying it doesn’t belong there. What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
The wrong reagent on the line doesn’t show up on a control panel: it shows up hours later, in the treated water or in a piece of kit that starts failing. And then the batch has to be redone and explained. This camera moves the moment somebody finds out to the minute the container was connected, with a picture of the one that’s plugged in. The plant manager decides whether dosing stops; IRIS stops nothing.
What people usually ask
Does the camera know which product is inside the drum?
No. The camera sees the container, its shape, its color and the label stuck to it, and it sees which line it is connected to. What’s really inside is told by the label, the packing slip and, if it matters, a lab analysis. IRIS warns that the container in place doesn’t match the one assigned to that line; the contents are confirmed by a person.
Can IRIS shut the dosing off by itself?
No. IRIS doesn’t act on any equipment: it doesn’t close valves, doesn’t stop pumps and doesn’t send anyone anywhere. What it does is raise the alert with the camera, the time and the video, so a person decides with the picture in front of them. What happens next is in the plant’s procedure, and that procedure is written by the plant.
What if the puddle is just water from a wash-down?
It can happen, and that’s why the alert carries the video. The rule fires on liquid on the floor outside the containment berms, and the picture of the moment travels with it: in two seconds you can see whether it’s wash water or product. If the room is always washed at the same hour, that window can be left out of the rule. The plant is the one that decides that.
