What changes for whoever answers for the facility
In a prison workshop, a tool missing at closing time is a serious problem, and today it is settled by counting them one by one by hand, every day, with the workshop still full and the shift ending. The camera watches the board and knows whether they’re all there. If one is missing, it says which slot and since when it’s been empty, so the video opens right there instead of being reviewed from end to end. It doesn’t replace the workshop count: it goes alongside it and, above all, ahead of it, because the empty slot is seen when it appears and not two hours later. And when everything is in its place, which is nearly always, it says nothing: a full board is the good state, and that’s exactly what this picture shows.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who took the tool?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. What it sees is the board: a slot that was full and is now empty, and the time it went that way. That’s enough to open the video at the exact minute, and the person who watches it and decides what to do is somebody at the facility, not the camera. Nor does it classify or predict anyone: it doesn’t say who might take one.
Do we need a tag or a chip on every tool?
No. It looks at the board exactly as it already is: every tool has its slot and its painted outline, and that’s precisely what makes a gap visible from across the room. The workshop already has that order; the only thing added is a camera watching it all the time instead of a person checking it twice a day. If the board changes — a tool is added, a row is rearranged — the reference is set again and that’s it.
What about the tools that aren’t on the board, the ones in the drawers?
The camera can only answer for what it sees. The board is in plain view and that’s why it can be checked at a glance; what’s inside a closed drawer isn’t seen, isn’t counted, and saying otherwise would be promising something we don’t do. If the facility wants those included, the way to do it is to have them inside the frame at counting time: an open tray on the bench is counted just as well as the board.
