Water is coming in through the gate and still rising

A storm, late in the afternoon. Water is pouring in through the open gate and already covers all the gravel in the yard. A worker in a raincoat and hard hat is wading across, water up to his knees. The level is read against something that’s always there: the stone courses of the low wall. Four are under water now; half an hour ago it was two. It isn’t an estimate, it’s a reading, and you can see it in the picture.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • water at the transformer base
  • person inside the flooded compound
  • water pouring in through the gate
  • power transformer
  • switching cabinet

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 4Courses of the low wall under water
  • 2Courses it has risen in half an hour
  • 35 minWater inside the compound for
  • 1People inside the compound right now
  • 1Open access points letting the water in
  • 18:52Time of the first alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

there is water inside the compound and the level covers one more course of the low wall than the previous reading

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the time and the level read against the low wall
  2. repeat the reading every few minutes for as long as water keeps coming in
  3. keep the video from the first frame with water inside the compound
The instruction that set it up«Tell me the moment water gets inside the compound, and keep telling me how many courses of the low wall it has covered.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

He has been deciding by phone for half an hour: the duty manager asks how the water is doing and is told it’s rising. In a flood what decides is the order, what gets turned off first and at what time people have to be pulled out of the compound, and for that you need to know how much it has risen since the last report. The camera reads it against the same low wall, from the same framing: two courses were covered, now there are four. And it says so every few minutes with the image beside it. He stops deciding by phone and decides by looking.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS measure the water level in inches?

It doesn’t invent inches. It reads the level against a physical reference that’s in the picture itself: the courses of the low wall, the plinth of the control house, the foot of the fence. If that reference has been measured on site, the reading converts to inches; if not, it is given in courses. It’s a repeatable reading, always from the same view, not an estimate.

Can IRIS shut the substation down if it floods?

No. IRIS doesn’t switch anything and doesn’t trip anything. It reports that there’s water inside, how high it has got and whether it’s still rising, with the picture and the time. Switching off, and in what order, is decided by a person following the site’s procedure.

Does it work at night and in heavy rain?

It works with whatever light there is: the yard lighting, a night camera or a thermal camera already fitted. Rain and wind muddy the picture, which is why the reading is taken against a fixed reference in the compound and not off the surface of the water. If the picture isn’t good enough to read the level, IRIS says so and still reports that there’s water inside.

And the best part

Video tells you what happened. An alert reaches you while it’s happening.

Reviewing the recording helps you explain. Hearing about it at the time helps you get there. Two different things, and until now you only had the first.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
