A cabinet is being emptied of its copper

Almost one in the afternoon. Two people inside the substation yard. One is crouched in front of a field cabinet standing wide open, pulling copper conductors out of it. The other is crossing the gravel at the back with a coil of cable in both hands. On the ground there’s another coil and an open tool bag. No hard hats, no work clothes, no work vehicle: copper is being taken out of a cabinet and there’s no job open at this site.

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 6 minTime since the first alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

there are people working at an open cabinet or moving cable and no job has been declared

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the time and how many people are inside
  2. keep the video from the moment the cabinet is opened, and follow it while it lasts
  3. list in the report which cabinets were left open, for the check afterward
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a cabinet is opened or cable is taken out of the yard when no authorized work is under way.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Nearly one in the afternoon, and today’s alert is that two people are pulling copper out of an open cabinet. That copper is worth little at the scrapyard and costs a great deal to replace, because what gets cut isn’t just cable: it’s earthing, connections and protection that leave the site unsafe and sometimes out of service. This camera moves that moment to the minute it’s happening, with the image, the time and the exact point. That’s what lets you call while they’re still there, instead of filling in a report next morning in front of an empty cabinet.

What people usually ask

How does IRIS tell this apart from maintenance work?

It doesn’t tell them apart on its own: the site does. IRIS sees facts — a cabinet standing open, cable coming out, two people in the yard, no hard hats or work clothes in sight — and checks them against the jobs the company itself has declared for that day and that spot. If there’s a declared job, nothing is raised. If there isn’t, the alert goes out with the picture. It never says anyone is stealing: it says what’s being done and that nobody booked it.

Can IRIS stop it?

No. IRIS doesn’t act: it doesn’t lock doors, it doesn’t set off sirens on its own, it doesn’t operate anything and it doesn’t phone anyone. What it does is make sure somebody finds out while it’s happening rather than the next day, with material to decide on: how many people, at which spot in the compound, since what minute. Whoever raises the alarm, sends a crew or cuts the supply is always a person.

What’s kept afterward?

What’s kept is the video of the episode with the camera, the date, the minute and the spot in the compound, plus the list of which cabinets were left open, which is exactly what the repair crew needs. What can be done with that video afterward depends on how the system is declared and on the rules that apply where you operate: IRIS supplies the material and the exact minute, not the judgment. How long it’s kept is decided by the site.

The real interface, step by step

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool doesn’t fit in a demo.

  1. Checks the whole system
  2. Flags what is failing
  3. Puts it on one screen

And the best part

Nobody was hired to stare at a screen. They were hired to know what to do.

Watching is what a machine does best; deciding is what only a person does. IRIS watches all four thousand at once and hands over only what calls for a decision.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
