What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
The person deciding is fifty miles away and has the first few minutes ahead of them, and in a battery park those minutes are everything. The camera puts the site in front of them: which container it is, whether the door is open, which way the smoke is going and whether anybody is still inside the fence. With that they make the call with good information, close the access and decide without going in. The video of the first smoke is kept for the report.

Does IRIS detect a fire in a battery storage site?
It sees what can be seen: smoke, flame and a door that has been blown open. It alerts right away, with the camera, the time and the video of the seconds before, and shows whether anyone is still inside the fence. What’s happening inside the cells is reported by the battery management system, and the gases are measured by the detector. IRIS works alongside those systems and provides the image.
Can it warn before the smoke appears?
With a thermal camera it reads the heat visible on the outside of the container, and a hot spot on a wall or a vent shows up before the flame does. With an ordinary camera, no: there has to be visible smoke or flame. In no case does it predict: IRIS reports what’s happening, not what’s going to happen.
Is the alert any use if help takes a while to arrive?
Yes, because it changes what they know when they get there. Before going in they already know which container is burning, whether the door is open, which way the smoke is going and whether anyone is inside the enclosure. The camera also keeps sending live images throughout, and the video of the first minute is kept for the report afterward.
