What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
For the plant manager what changes is the clock. A fall next to a basin is dealt with in minutes or it isn’t dealt with at all. If nobody is watching the monitor, the alert goes out anyway, with the camera, the time and the video of the exact moment, and the on-call team knows which basin to head for without asking. Afterward the recording is there for the incident report, which is the part nobody ever reconstructs properly from memory.

Does IRIS know whether the operator fainted or fell?
No. IRIS diagnoses nothing and doesn’t know what’s wrong with a person. What it sees is that someone is horizontal, on the ground, in an area where people work standing up, and that they haven’t moved for a while. On that basis it raises the alert and hands over the video. What happened, and what to do about it, is decided by whoever gets there, not by the camera.
And if the operator is crouching down to work?
It doesn’t fire. The rule tells apart a crouching person, who shifts position and moves their arms, from someone lying still. How long it has to last before an alert goes out is set by the plant: in some sites it is fifteen seconds, in others a minute. IRIS doesn’t write that rule, it applies it.
Is it any use at night or with the plant empty?
Yes, and that’s when it matters most. The camera doesn’t need anyone watching a monitor: the alert goes out on its own to the on-call phone or to the control room. In low light you need a camera built for it, with infrared or with support lighting. No image means no detection, and that’s checked before anything is installed.
