What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
A discharge that skips the checkpoint gets paid for twice: at the treatment works, which receives a load it wasn’t expecting, and in the file the basin authority opens afterward. Without a camera, the first sign of it is the process going out of control downstream, by which time nobody knows who did it. IRIS alerts while the tanker is still unloading, with the exact time and video of the vehicle, the hose and the chamber. With that you can walk out to the gate and, above all, you can document it.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know what the tanker is discharging?
No. A camera sees liquid coming out of a hose, and sees whether it’s cloudy, foaming or colored. It doesn’t know what’s in it: that comes from the packing slip, from analysis of a sample, or from the haulier. What IRIS provides is proof that a discharge happened, at what time, for how long and with which vehicle. What was discharged is established afterward, and not by the camera.
Does it recognize the driver?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone, does not recognize faces and does not match them against any database. It detects situations: there’s a vehicle unloading and there’s nobody from the plant at the point. The video shows what happened, and who was there’s established by people and by the site’s procedures, not by the camera.
What if the discharge was authorized after all?
Then there’s no alert, provided the rule covers it. The plant defines what normal looks like: what hours the discharge point has, whether an operator must be present, and which vehicles are on the approved list. IRIS compares what it sees against that rule. Changing the rule means changing a sentence, and it is written by whoever is in charge of the site.
