What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
Twenty past eleven in the morning. The technician came in at nine, alone, with the key and the day’s work order, and he has been on the ground between two transformers for four minutes. That’s how a substation is visited: somebody arrives, does the job and leaves, and in between there’s nobody who can see that they have gone down. What exists today is a phone that doesn’t answer and a long hour before anyone worries. A camera watching that walkway doesn’t prevent the fall, but it turns that hour into a few minutes, and for a person on the ground minutes are almost everything. IRIS doesn’t say what happened or why: it says somebody is still where nobody should be still, and it raises the alarm.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whether he is hurt or just crouching down to work?
It doesn’t know, and it doesn’t say. All it sees is that there’s a person on the ground who hasn’t moved for a while. A worker crouching moves; someone who has fallen doesn’t. That’s why the rule is about time and not about posture, and why the alert arrives with the picture: whoever gets it sees in two seconds whether to send somebody. We would rather warn once too often and have it closed in two seconds.
Does it replace a lone-worker device?
No. It’s another layer, and both are needed. The device depends on being carried, charged and working; the camera depends on the person being in frame. Neither covers the whole site on its own, which is why one doesn’t replace the other. What the camera adds is a picture, and the picture is what decides what you set out with.
Does IRIS follow technicians around while they work?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not read license plates, it does not compare against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It keeps no record of who came in, it does not measure how long anybody works and it is not for that. It detects a situation — a person motionless on the ground — and raises the alarm; it doesn’t watch the person.
