What changes for whoever answers for the site
It’s almost never left open out of pure carelessness: it is left open because somebody went in to do something and came out with both hands full. And from then on dust gets in, rain gets in when it blows sideways, an animal gets in, and anyone gets in. Because the building sits out among the basins, nobody comes past again until the next round, and at night that’s hours. IRIS doesn’t close the door and doesn’t send anyone: it flags that the door has been out of its frame for more minutes than the plant said, with the exact time it was opened. Closing it is still a person’s job.
What people usually ask
Do you need a contact switch on the door?
No. The camera is already looking at that building. You mark the door on the image and what gets checked is whether it’s in its frame or not. And there’s something a contact switch can’t give you: the video of the moment it was left open, which is what lets you understand what happened without asking everybody the next morning.
How long does it have to be open before it raises anything?
Whatever the plant sets, and it can differ per door and per time band. The switchroom door might be five minutes and the store room half an hour, because they aren’t the same risk and not the same traffic. If the alert fires every time somebody steps in to check a panel, the operator stops reading it within a week, and then it’s no use on the night it really is left open.
Does IRIS know who left the door open?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not read license plates, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. What it watches is the door, not people. The video of the moment is kept, and if it matters a person will interpret who is in it; the camera doesn’t put names to anybody.
