Tuesday morning, and the store operator has stopped in front of the rack: there’s an empty bay on the lower level and nobody knows since when. This isn’t an incident, and that’s why it interrupts nobody: the dot shows in gold and doesn’t blink. It’s a visual audit of the rack. Today someone walks it with a sheet once a week and writes down what they see; the rest of the week nobody looks at it. The camera looks every time: how many bays there are, how many are occupied, and since what time the missing one has been missing. There’s nothing to attend to, there’s something to know. And the limit is an honest one: IRIS sees that a drum is missing from its bay; it doesn’t know what’s inside any of them.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know what’s inside the drums?

No. IRIS sees whether a bay in the rack is occupied or empty, and that’s as far as it goes. It doesn’t know what’s inside any drum, it doesn’t read labels and it doesn’t know whether the one in a bay is the one that should be there. That’s what the plant’s own records are for, with their packing slips and data sheets. What the camera adds is that those records can be checked against what’s actually on the rack every day, instead of once a week.

Why does this not come through as an alert?

Because there’s nothing to attend to. A drum missing from its bay may be exactly what was supposed to happen: somebody took it down to dose with it. Interrupting a plant manager for that would spend the attention he needs for the camera watching a person on the ground. That’s why it shows in gold and doesn’t blink, and why it lives in a log rather than in an alert. If everything interrupts, nothing does.

Does IRIS identify the operator standing in front of the rack?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not read license plates, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. Here counting people isn’t even needed for anything: what’s being looked at is the rack. Someone appearing in the frame changes nothing about what gets logged.
