The sign that should announce the narrowing is turned to face the wall. The father pushing a stroller finds the sidewalk closed and has to step into the road, between cars. Today the highways inspector finds out about that site when a complaint comes in, or when something has already happened. With IRIS he sees the construction fence from day one, how much sidewalk and how much lane it takes and whether the signage is in place, and he can cross that with the permit register. He knows which works are open in the street, not only which are open on paper.

Can IRIS tell whether roadwork have a permit?
IRIS doesn’t open the permit file on its own, but it does make the comparison with what’s in the street possible. It detects the fencing, the date it appears and the area it takes up, and those figures are cross-checked with the city’s permit register through the API. When there are works in the street and no open permit for that stretch, the alert fires. What IRIS adds is the part nobody looks at today: what’s actually on the ground.
Does IRIS detect missing signage, or only that works are there?
IRIS detects both things — the works and the missing signage — and each is configured separately. On one side it recognizes the fencing and how much it takes up; on the other it checks whether the signage that should be at that spot is visible in the image. A sign turned around or lying on the ground doesn’t read as a sign, and that’s precisely what you want to know. Anything outside the frame can’t be checked from there.
Can IRIS show whether works take up more space than they’re allowed?
IRIS measures what the works take up on the image: how much sidewalk and how much lane, and from what day. Comparing that with what was authorized requires the permit data, which the city holds. Put the two together and the gap between what the paperwork says and what’s on the street shows up right away — the part almost nobody looks at today.
