What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
A facility has dozens of corridors and dozens of schedules, and almost all of the corridors are empty almost all of the time. That’s exactly what makes them useful to anyone who shouldn’t be there. Today you find out on the route, when nobody is there any more. With IRIS the stretch watches itself during the hours the facility has set and raises the alert while someone is still inside, with the camera, the stretch and the video from the moment they entered. The alert doesn’t say who they’re or why they’re there: it says there’s someone where there should be nobody right now, and that’s enough to go and look.
What people usually ask
Who decides which area is closed and at what hour?
The facility does. IRIS doesn’t arrive with a list of forbidden places or with its own idea of what’s right or wrong: it arrives blank. Someone at the facility draws the area on the image, sets the time bands in which it has to be empty and chooses who gets alerted. And it changes when the day’s regime changes, without touching the camera. That’s the part you can’t delegate to a system: a facility’s rules are written by whoever answers for that facility.
Does the alert point at a particular person?
No. IRIS identifies nobody and can’t be used to sanction a particular person. It does not recognize faces, does not compare them against any database, does not store who anyone is and keeps no record on anyone: it sees that there is a person inside an area at an hour when that area has to be empty, and that is all the alert says. Who that person is will be known by the officer who goes there, if it matters, and through the facility’s own procedures.
What if the person walking through is staff, or someone with permission?
IRIS doesn’t know whether that person has permission. It can’t know and it isn’t its place to know: permission is a piece of paper and a decision of the facility, not something you can see in an image. The alert arrives anyway and comes with its video, and whoever receives it closes it in two seconds if they recognize a routine task. That’s better: an alert closed quickly costs very little, and an area that only alerts once nobody is there’s worth nothing.
