What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Windy morning, and the neighbor across the road is already taking photos from the sidewalk. This isn’t a broom problem. The plastic that blows out ends up in his complaint, in the city’s letter and, when the environmental permit comes up for renewal, in the file somebody opens to decide. Every bag outside is a line in that file. Counting how many cross the fence, at what time and with which dumpster left open turns a vague accusation into data, and lets you show that the number is going down.

What people usually ask

Isn’t this just a cleaning problem?

No. A dirty sidewalk gets swept; a sidewalk dirty every week gets reported. The plastics that leave the plant reach the neighbors, social media and the city, and from there the file that gets read when the permit is renewed. That’s why the camera doesn’t watch the ground inside: it watches the fence line, which is where the problem stops being yours and becomes everybody’s.

Can it really count how many pieces get out?

Yes, and it’s a different job from raising alerts. To count, you draw a line over the fence and the camera counts what crosses it, hour by hour and day by day. Asking is for finding; counting is for measuring, and they aren’t done the same way: you can’t describe a line with a sentence, you have to draw it. That figure is repeatable, and it serves both for the conversation with the city and for knowing which dumpster to cover first.

Can it tell a bag from a leaf or a bird?

Yes, in most cases, from the way it moves and how it looks, and whatever slips through is tuned with the rule. A windy day full of leaves doesn’t have to fill the shift with alerts: the plant decides how many pieces per minute make it an alert and which stretches of fence the camera watches. IRIS doesn’t write that rule; the people who know the site do.
