Entering a reactor with nobody outside is one of those things that doesn’t give a second chance. If the person passes out inside, nobody will know until somebody happens to walk by. IRIS sees the manway open, sees there’s only one person on the platform and times how long it’s been like that. The alert reaches the control room while it’s happening, not when the shift starts asking why the radio has gone quiet.
What people usually ask
Can IRIS measure the oxygen or the gases inside the reactor?
No. That’s the gas detector’s job, and no video replaces it. IRIS sees the manway open, sees that somebody has gone in and sees that there’s nobody outside. It’s a different, complementary layer: the atmosphere is measured by the instrument, the scene is seen by the camera, and both land in the same control room.
Does the alert still work if the person disappears inside the tank?
Yes. The rule doesn’t only count bodies in view: it counts that the manway is still open and that nobody is keeping watch outside. That combination is what fires the alert, and the timer keeps running for as long as it lasts. As soon as a second person appears on the platform, the scene is back to the condition the plant asked for.
Does this replace the confined-space permit?
No. The permit, the pre-entry measurement and the rescue plan stay with the plant and its procedure. IRIS doesn’t write rules and doesn’t sign anything: it checks in the image that what was agreed is actually happening, and raises the alert when it isn’t. That’s the difference between a form signed in the morning and knowing what’s going on up there at five past eleven.
