Mid-afternoon in the tooling shop. An operator has climbed onto the grating platform and put both hands inside the die to free a part. The station beacon is still green: the machine hasn’t been locked out. The tools are outside, on the blue cart, with the wrenches and the drivers on the wooden top. Nobody is holding the control. Does IRIS lock the machine if somebody reaches inside?
No. IRIS stops no machine and doesn’t replace the interlock or the padlocked lockout, which are the only things that keep the die from moving. What IRIS does is give the alert right away when somebody has gone in with the beacon green, and save the video. Who acts and what happens next is decided by the plant.
How does IRIS know the machine hasn’t been locked out?
From what’s visible: the station beacon is green and there’s no padlock or tag on the isolator. IRIS doesn’t read the plant’s lockout register. If the plant keeps one in a system, the two can be cross-checked to see whether the times match. What IRIS contributes is the picture and the exact minute.
Is there a record of who that person was?
No. IRIS does not recognize faces and identifies nobody. It sees a situation: “somebody put their hands in the die with the beacon green,” with the camera and the time. If the plant needs to know who was at that station, a person looks at the video or checks the shift sheet. That call belongs to the plant, not to the system.
