What changes

What changes for whoever runs the road

Today nobody checks that a sign is actually showing what it was told to show. The control room sends the order, the sign replies that it has received it, and that’s where the checking stops: whether the message can be read, and read in full, is only known when somebody drives past and looks at it. A sign with burned-out LEDs keeps answering “OK” while displaying a word nobody can read. IRIS looks at it from the outside, the way the driver looks at it, and tells the maintenance manager the same day it fails, not when a member of the public reports it. A sign is safety infrastructure: if it warns of a danger and can’t be read, it’s worse than not having it, because back in the room they believe the warning has been given.

What people usually ask

Which sign faults does IRIS pick up?

Two, and they’re the ones that matter. One: the sign is broken or dark — LEDs missing, the word coming out incomplete, or the panel black when it should be lit. Two: it’s showing the wrong message, because it kept yesterday’s or because it didn’t change when it was told to. The first can be seen just by looking at the sign; the second also needs to know what it was asked to display.

Can IRIS tell whether the sign is showing the wrong message?

Only if the system that drives the signs is connected. IRIS reads what’s visible on the sign; to say that this text isn’t the right one, you have to be able to compare it with the order that was sent, and that requires a link to that system. Without it, IRIS still reports that the sign is broken, dark or unreadable, but not that it’s showing something different from what was ordered. We would rather say this plainly than promise it and fall short.

Can a sign always be read, at night and against the light?

Not always, and it depends on the framing and the light. A sign with the sun straight ahead, or at night in heavy rain, can be unreadable for the camera just as it is hard for the driver. That’s why we check camera by camera before promising anything: if the sign can’t be reliably read from that spot, the framing is changed or the sign is left out. What we don’t do is accept a reading that doesn’t hold up.
