Two thirty in the morning is short-cut time: the corridor is closed while the load moves and it’s nearly always respected, but at that hour there are few people about and a lot of walking to save. Under a full ladle there’s no margin: if anything falls, it falls on top. With the camera, the crane driver and the control room see the person inside the corridor while they’re still walking, with the image and the exact point. And by the end of the month there’s a count of unauthorized entries per shift: it shows whether the short cut is one person or already a habit.

No. IRIS does not recognize faces and does not match anyone against a list. It sees that a person is inside the aisle while a load with metal is moving, and that’s what it reports: the point, the camera and the time. Who it was comes from the plant access control or from whoever reviews the video. The rule is written about the situation, not about the person, and in a steelworks that difference is welcome.
Can IRIS stop the crane?
No. IRIS doesn’t act on any machine. It alerts the crane driver and the control room while the person is still in the aisle, and saves the video from the moment they walked in. Halting the load, sounding the horn or closing the walkway is decided by a person, following the plant procedure. The value is that the alert arrives while something can still be done, not in the report the next day.
Does it work at night, with the glare of the ladle?
Yes. This scene is from the small hours and it’s the normal case in a steelworks: a dark bay, floodlights and one very strong light source moving overhead. The camera settles into that mix, and the outline of a person on the marked floor still reads. Where the shot is washed out by the glare, that gets said and the camera is repositioned: better to move the camera than to trust a bad picture.
